Welcome to Toronto...so I witnessed my first mugging...well, the first one I witnessed that I wasn't actually part of. I was mugged when I was like 8 at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, by some punk kids trying to steal my quarters for the arcade, which prompted my parents to get me to learn Karate and Kung Fu to subsequently kick the ass of whoever dares to touch me again. But that's another story.

So anyway, service had just finished, and Tianne, Jamie and I decided to go to Starbucks for our weekly Sunday morning coffee. We're walking down Beverley towards Queens St., just crossing the sidewalk, when we hear some screaming. I turn back, and I thought what I saw was just a bunch of kids playing. But....why were the two black kids pulling apart the old Chinese lady in the middle? Why was one kid holding on to her purse? Uhhh...something's not right. Took me a while before I realized it was a mugging at 11am in broad daylight right by a public thoroughfare. I immediately started heading back there as fast as my crippled legs would let me, but the kids just pushed the lady down and ran away without the purse. Amazingly the lady was able to hold onto it.

I didn't get a good look at those kids cuz their backs were towards me the whole time, but it really made me pissed off at the whole situation because I know what it's like, outnumbered and helpless. If it weren't for my leg (I can't run for at least another couple of months) I'd have chased down at least one of them and probably would've unleashed years of repressed memories on him. ("Steal my quarters, huh?? Take that!" *thwack* "Your quarters?? I was trying to steal the lady's purse! What are you talking about??")

We immediately went to the lady's aid while another witness called 911. A cop pulled up within 2 minutes. I stood there trying to translate while Jamie put her nursing skills to good use, while other witnesses went and grabbed bandages and ice for her. Luckily one guy took a picture of them just before they hit the lady. The two idiots apparently were pissing in his garden, and he recognized them from the hit they made the week before. It wasn't a very clear picture, but it gave a good general description. Apparently the same two idiots were most likely responsible for a rash of crime in the area lately, beginning with a broken car window for a churchgoer every week.

Tianne mostly just stood there in shock the whole time. All I could say was, "welcome to downtown Toronto, Ti..." Heh...I don't think she'll be going out alone very much now, which is good cuz I won't need to worry about her so much then =)

justin's thoughts | Saturday, September 13, 2003

Ok, so I'm cheating and delaying...so it's not really Saturday (it's actually Wednesday 1:40am) and I haven't blogged in a month....can't really blame me though. So much has happened in the past month that I just don't have the energy left to blog. Even now I'm just forcing myself to write since I haven't done so in a month. But the truth is I don't feel like it.

A quick note to those of you who don't see the plain and obvious: yes, I'm walking again. I mean, geez. If I'm walking towards you, don't ask me, "hey, are you walking again?" Next time I swear, I'm just gonna say, "No, I'm not walking. This is the latest technology where I'm actually in a wheelchair, but it gives off the image that I'm walking. Cool eh?"

Actually, I'm just really glad I can walk again. I'm really ahead of schedule, especially since Dr. Marks told me that I'm supposed to be wearing my splint (which keeps the leg locked straight) until September 29. As of now, not only did I progress enough to wear the knee brace (which lets me bend to certain angles), but I'm already at the point where I can keep it off at home and maybe even when I'm out a little. It helps a lot when so many of my friends came to visit me while I was crippled and bedridden. It doesn't help when they hit me in my knee "by accident" or make fun of me while I'm stoned off my ass. But for all those that visited me while I was bedridden, those that brought me food, played PS2 with me, helped me prop up my leg...I just wanted to say thanks guys...it really meant a lot to me.

Tianne's been driving me nuts with her constant demands. "Drive me here, drive me there, I want this, I want that" She takes my fridge, my phone, my printer, my lights....everything. And then she calls me in the middle of the night to complain about how slow her printer is and how she needs to go buy a new one. I swear, if she didn't make me pancakes on Saturday morning I'd just drive her in the middle of nowhere and ditch her there. Heh heh. On a side note, I really begin to wonder what everyone else must be thinking of me. I mean, seriously. Anytime I'm seen with a girl, even if it's just for a single meal, everyone assumes she's my girlfriend and rumors spread like wildfire. Now since I spend so much time with Ti everyone's like, "hey where's your girlfriend?" Now that's just sick. Not only is she my cousin, but she's also more than 4 years younger than me. She's not even 18 yet, so isn't that illegal? I mean come on guys, am I not allowed to hang out with any girls without misconceptions? Frig.

Anyway I just wanted to post something up for now. Lots to say, I'll prolly finish this later.
